Sutter's Fort: A Glimpse into Historic Sacramento
Sutter's Fort is a working museum that boasts one of the most comprehensive collections of authentic gold rush and pre-Civil War era memorabilia in the country. This historical state park, located on L Street in Sacramento, is a learning place that puts visitors in the middle of a reproduction of nineteenth-century America.
The historical gold rush takes center stage at Sutter's Fort, featuring hundreds of original artifacts obtained from the historical site -- items like gold rush sifting pans, a unique pair of binoculars that are made of real bone, original paper documents, books, photographs and paintings, among many other one-of-a-kind items.
Travel back in time and learn about our country's founding and history. Named after the Swiss immigrant John Sutter, Sutter's Fort is a collection of several outbuildings once maintained by the Sutter family and others who lived on-premises, including the infamous Donner party. Live actors portray what life might have been like almost 200 years ago, putting on shows and demonstrations that let the kids (and grownups) interact as they learn.
Much gold-panning paraphernalia, including small amounts of the coveted precious metal that were harvested back in the nineteenth century, are kept on site and preserved for guests to view. The historical significance is great -- the gold rush is a phenomenon that brought tens of thousands of people to the W0est Coast, thus contributing the bustling status that the great state of California is known for today.
