Discovery Museum Science and Space Center: an Out of This World Experience
Sacramento's Discovery Museum Science and Space Center is a true world of wonder for the little ones. Watch the kids' eyes light up as they take charge of space ships in the mission control room or set foot in a replica of NASA's Challenger, get up-close-and-personal with real wildlife from all over California and learn about fossils and prehistoric creatures like dinosaurs. The Discovery Museum is so much fun that your kids won't even realize that they're spending the day in an educational facility.
A variety of crafts is available for kids twelve and under. Currently, the museum's Gee Whiz Geology allows the little ones to make their own 3D geode with paper and glitter, which they can take home when they're done learning and playing, if you can pull them away.
Kids also love the live animal shows. Live mammals, reptiles, birds and insects are brought into the facility where the kids can see them closer than ever before, all while learning about their eating habits, life cycles and living habitats.
Be sure to stop by California's only public planetarium. Kids aren't the only ones who look up in astonishment as the planetarium's ceiling converts into an out-of-this-world experience-- grown ups love it, too. The 20-minute show showcases stars and constellations, making visitors feel as if they are really sitting in the middle of outer space. Because the show requires silence, kids must be at least 4 years old to attend the planetarium shows.
Museum admission on weekdays is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and teens aged 13-17, and $3 for kids aged 4 -12. Kids under 3 are free. Weekend admission rates are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and teens, $4 for kids aged 4 - 12 and kids under 3 are still free.
