Zocalo Mexicana: Fine Mexican Dining in Sac
Located downtown on Capitol Avenue, Sacramento's Zocalo Mexicana Restaurant is one of the city's hottest dinner destinations. Upscale atmosphere somehow manages to balance itself out so that it is not too stuffy, so it's perfect for a dinner date, business lunch or supper with the family.
The decor is decadent and iconic of native Mexican culture. White tablecloths, soft lighting and extremely attentive wait staff make for an impressive experience at Zocalo, which is unparalleled to anything else in the area.
Start your Zocalo experience off right by trying one of the restaurant's famous small plates. Flautas de Pollo, a tempting mixture of chicken meat, Mexican salsa, cabbage, cream, fresh cheeses and radish; chipotle chicken (or steak) nachos with guacamole, sour cream, tomato, pinto beans, onions and chorizo atop crisp-fried tortilla chips; or the house ceviche (fish or shrimp) with pico de gallo and avocado all make excellent choices to start your meal.
For your main course, try the Guanajuato-- three chicken and cheese enchiladas with Oaxaca cheese and tomatillo; fish tacos with cabbage and chipotle aioli; chile relleno with Oaxaca cheese, carnitas, California chili sauce and cream; or the Birria, which features braised beef, black bean puree and pickled red onions. All are sure to please.
Don't forget to order a side order of Zocalo's famous plantain chips with sour cream and black beans, or red potatoes with garlic and chili peppers. These sides will go perfectly with your main course.
Be sure to save room for some to Zocalo's tantalizing dessert options. Brownies con Nieve, a rich, fudgy brownie with a coffee sauce; flan with chocolate syrup; cinnamon-sugar fried plantains, and churros, which feature vanilla cream filling, are available and make the perfect ending to a perfect Zocalo meal.
Dress is business casual and reservations at Zocalo are always extremely helpful. Call (916) 441-0303, or visit the Zocalo website, for more information.
