The California State Military Museum in Sacramento is an educational experience that will bring a newly-renewed appreciation for our country’s servicemen and women. The facility, which was opened in 1991, is located downtown in the Old Sacramento Historic District on Second Street.

More than 30,000 military artifacts are located at the Military Museum. From authentic weaponry and uniforms from major wars to real historical writings and documents, the California State Military Museum has many one-of-a-kind items that can’t be viewed anywhere else in the country.

The Museum’s Main Floor Gallery features exhibits on the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Korean War and Spanish-American War, among many others.  Other exhibits on the main floor include a military swords showcase, the Curtis Hall collection of Martial long arms, Regimental Colors of the California National Guard, and Early and Mexican/Spanish California.

The second floor is home to a conference/class room that is used for meetings, educational programs and studying. The Major General Robert Thrasher Gallery holds impressive exhibits that pay tribute to the Navy, Marines and Air Force. A collection of scale military aircraft is a favorite of the children who visit the museum.

The Major General Walter Story Memorial Library and Research Center is one of the most comprehensive historical military libraries in the country. Featuring tens of thousands of original military and political documents, many of which are hundreds of years old, the library and research facility makes real pieces of history available to researchers, students and historians. The library is located on the museum's third floor.

The museum is open on Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed on major holidays except Independence Day, Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Admission to the museum is $5 for adults and $3 for kids and seniors. Kids under three years of age are free.
